Ensuring dignity for disabled persons

“Due to various constraints, Bangladesh cannot replicate the facilities enjoyed by the physically challenged people in developed countries. Yet it can protect the disabled from the widespread neglect and hazards that await them while outside home.
The Finance Minister’s assurance to a parliamentary caucus to enhance allocation for the disabled in the budget for the next fiscal year sounds inspiring. It is indeed expressive of a noble intent on the part of the government. Alleviation of the scores of woes and impediments besetting the people with disability has long been a routine part of pledges made by policymakers. Some of these promises were met, backed by state financial and infrastructural support. A lot of others remained elusive. The Finance Minister’s assurance of the budgetary fillip, if delivered, is expected to put in place a number of vital facilities. They include introduction of  primary health care at community clinics, special arrangement in trains and government buses and 10 per cent quota at hostels for working women with disability. Setting up of research centres in divisional headquarters also comprises the facilities on offer.”
