The two-day workshop titled “Disability Rights and Inclusive Reporting,” held on 12th and 13th May 2025 in Rangpur, was a joint initiative by the National Institute of Mass Communication (NIMC) and the Social Security Policy Support (SSPS) Programme, UNDP. Aimed at enhancing the media’s role in promoting disability inclusion, the event brought together journalists, media professionals, and development stakeholders to raise awareness, build capacity, and encourage ethical reporting practices on disability issues.
This workshop marked the launch of a countrywide capacity-building series. In alignment with Bangladesh’s dedication to the global pledge of “Leave No One Behind,” the sessions stressed the need for accurate, respectful, and empowering portrayals of persons with disabilities. Discussions centered on crucial legal and policy instruments, including the Rights and Protection of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2013 and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). Participants explored key topics such as ethical reporting, the use of appropriate language, and the importance of consent and privacy in disability-focused journalism.

A significant outcome of the workshop was the formation of a network comprising 25 trained journalists who are committed to advancing disability-inclusive reporting. These participants pledged to continue covering disability-related topics, aiming to challenge societal stereotypes, raise public consciousness, and support the full realization of the rights of persons with disabilities through their media platforms.
This workshop is part of broader efforts to sensitize media professionals across all 64 districts of Bangladesh. By equipping journalists with the necessary knowledge and tools for inclusive and rights-based storytelling, the initiative aspires to cultivate a media landscape that is well-informed, compassionate, and socially responsible.
