Empowering Rural Women Insights from the SWAPNO Field Visit in Rangpur

This episode presents key qualitative findings from a field visit to the SWAPNO Project areas in Rangpur, conducted by the Social Security Policy Support (SSPS) Programme under the leadership of the Cabinet Division and GED, with technical support from UNDP and funding from DFAT. Drawing on Amartya Sen’s Capability Approach and the UNDP Gender Equality Strategy, the visit explored how conditional cash transfers are contributing to women’s agency, livelihood development, and social inclusion. Through dialogue with 25 women beneficiaries, this episode highlights how the SWAPNO intervention fosters transformative changes in gender roles, financial decision-making, and aspirations for education and leadership. The findings demonstrate the potential of well-designed social protection programmes to address structural inequalities, promote dignity, and unlock intergenerational development outcomes. This episode serves as an evidence-based reflection for policymakers, practitioners, and development partners committed to advancing inclusive social protection systems in Bangladesh.
