Originally, annual observance of the IDPD was proclaimed for the first time in 1992, through a resolution by the United Nations General Assembly. The day has been observed over the years to improve the lives of disabled people around the globe and prevent disabilities in the first place. The aim of IDPD is to encourage a better understanding of people affected by a disability through the process of raising awareness of rights, dignity and welfare of people with disabilities. The 2018 UN theme for IDPD was “empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality.”
