Bangladesh Climate Resilient Participatory Afforestation and Reforestation

Introduction:
The Climate Resilient Participatory Afforestation and Reforestation Project complements the Government’s commitment towards forest conservation to reduce forest degradation and improve forest coverage through participatory planning and monitoring in 9 coastal and hilly districts. The project is being jointly implemented by the Bangladesh Forest Department (BFD) under Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) and Arranayk Foundation (AF). The project consists of three components:
Component 1: Afforestation and Reforestation Program: Establish new afforested and reforested areas of total 17,000 ha land and 1,672 km roadside plantation in 9 districts through participatory approach.
Component 2: Alternative Livelihoods to Support Forest Communities: Support and build climate resilience of 6,000 households comprising of 25,000 people in 200 forest communities in 9 project districts through the diversification of livelihood opportunities and practices.
Component 3: Capacity Development for Forest Resource Planning and Management: Enhance capacity and technical knowledge base for sustainable development of the forest sector.
Eligibility Criteria:
Communities of 6,000 households of no less than 25,000 people in 200 forest communities in 9 coastal and hilly distrcts: Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Barisal, Patuakhali, Barguna, Bhola, and Feni.
 Targeting of beneficiaries:
The primary beneficiaries of the project will be the communities living close to the target forests and denuded areas. Benefits will be gained directly from community group development, mobilization and social cohesion support, improved capacity of community groups to participate in sustainable forests management, from employment and income generation opportunities and ultimately from resilience to climate change through established forest shelterbelts. Afforestation and reforestation will generate around 3.5 million man-days employment for the poor, including disadvantaged women and other vulnerable groups. Beneficiaries of the alternative livelihood support for forest communities program will target the poor, forest dependent households on the basis of participatory wealth ranking. Women-headed households and other vulnerable groups will be a priority.
